What first drew you to the accounting profession?
In an effort to avoid taking high school calculus I opted to take basic accounting with Sister Joseph Agnes. Turns out I loved it! It was so organized and very black and white. I immediately decided my major in college would be accounting. Back then, you were going to be a CPA and work in public accounting, period. Now so many more choices are offered to students. But public accounting suited me and I have had a great career so far.
Without naming names, describe your favorite client and why you enjoy working with them.
I really enjoy many of my clients. My favorites, challenge me all the time. They involve me in many of their decisions. They ask for research and like to debate findings and recommendations. I have learned from them that accounting is more gray than black and white.
What do you enjoy most about your professional life?
I specialize in working in the not-for-profit arena and really enjoy the spirit of every exempt organization I am lucky enough to serve. I love the startups, where you can really make a difference and get them up and running as “businesses.” I also enjoy the complexities of the larger organizations, where you get to participate in strategic decision making.
